The Best Fanfiction Websites

Fanfiction Websites

What are Fanfictions?

Fanfictions are a form of art through which writers can enjoy sharing their passion for a particular character, movie, drama, anime, etc. It is a phenomenon that got extremely popular in our digital age, where it is not easy to wait for what will happen next. Through fanfictions, writers can predict and imagine situations that are related to what will happen in the second season of a drama or the next part of a book.

Are they Legal?

Fanfictions tread on the thin thread between what can be considered a copyright infringement and what is not a copyright infringement. You can write a fanfiction using characters from a book (Eg: Harry Potter) you love. However, you can not copy from it, and you can not claim the characters as your own. They are considered a tribute to the owner of the original work, and for some people, a way to introduce new values to already existing characters and stories. Fanfictions are written by fans as a way of expressing their love for a work they watched or read.

Fanfiction Websites

Several real-life writers, in fact, start their career from writing fanfictions nowadays. The writer of  Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is an example of such writers, which explains why fanfiction websites are such a huge success now. This review will discuss the best fanfiction websites, their pros, cons, and the best ways to navigate through them.

Fanfiction.net

Fanfiction.net is the oldest fanfiction website available on the internet. It launched in 1998 and currently has more than 3 million users and various genres for writers to write into including; anime, manga, music, games, plays, movies, books, etc. Because its main focus is writing, the website has a straightforward interface that allows users and non-users to enter and read right away without much adds or pop-ups. If you wish to register, you just have to click sign up and sign up either with your email, Google account, Facebook, Twitter, or even your Amazon account.

The website has an effortless way of handling documents. You just have to upload your story in "Docx" form and voila! It is on the website with all the formatting you added on your word file. Another good point of the website is the Beta-testers. Beta-testers are writers who have been on the website long enough to apply as Betas/Editors. They revise your story and give you feedback on what you should change and why you should change it. There is also a mobile version of the website, and it is very light and easy to use.

Archieve of Our Own

Run by The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), Archive of Our Own is a website that is made by fans for fans. The Organization for Transformative Works is a non-profit organization that aims at keeping the fan-culture alive and even defends the write of fans to keep writing using their favourite characters. The organization is multinational as online volunteers come to it from various parts of the world (Me included). Their main website has more than one version in almost all languages, and they have a team that is always ready to help you with any issue.

Archive of Our own is one of the many projects of the organization, and it is by far the most popular. The website is invitation-based, and sometimes they close the invitations, however, most times you can easily invite yourself through the first page and just create your own account. You don't have to be a member to read the stories though. If you don't want to have an account, you can always start reading by choosing a story from the list. Archive of Our own probably has a larger selection of mature (R+) stories than fanfiction.net. Moreover, unlike fanfiction.net, it allows real-people fictions, so you can easily read a story about One Direction if you want to.

3. Wattpad

WattPad

Wattpad is a writing website that is not mainly fanfiction-based. However, their fanfiction section is one of the largest on the website. Wattpad is easy to use and visually enhanced with exclusive cover pictures that you can design and add to your story. It also hosts various writing contests and provides a spotlight to certain monthly picks. Users can quickly register on the website using their Google account, or even their Facebook account.

In terms of fanfiction, the contents inside the website are not always excellent, so be ready for anything! The website is totally free and mainly contains a lot of the real-person fictions. Also, the level of writers varies a lot. Young writers who are not very experienced usually start writing on Wattpad, because the Wattpad App is extremely popular within their age group. It is like a big social media, but just for writing.

DeviantArt

DeviantArt is another website that does not mainly depend on Fanfictions. However, it considers fanfictions as one of its art genres. The website is very popular with young upcoming artists, especially in terms of drawing. Fanart is a massive part of the website and fanfictions are a part of fanart in general. Although writing is not the main focus of the website, you can always find a vast selection of one-shots or short stories on the website. They are extremely popular between the users and more fitting to the interface of the website. Currently, the website has almost 250,000 Fanfiction. It is not a small number at all, and it is increasing rapidly. You can only register with your email. However, once you have an account, you can add what you want to your favourites, send friend requests and even join groups that you like.
