Actor Scope: George Hu

This guy is a gem! Ehm .. sorry still in fangirl mood ðŸ˜‰. Anyway, this time we will discuss the leading roles of this handsome actor above. George Hu is a New York-born Taiwanese actor who got talent scouted while visiting his family in Taiwan. He started his career after college and went from not knowing Taiwanese to fully mastering the language and showing some spectacular acting in his roles. Personally, I got to know him only recently as I never watched Taiwanese shows before, but I have to say one drama was enough to view the rest.

Best George Hu Dramas

1. Love Cheque Charge (2014)

My first show for this actor was Love Cheque Charge, a drama with a very catchy summary. He plays the role of a guy who somehow ends up delivering a message from a ghost to his past lover. The message ends up causing him trouble, and he signs a cheque that he will marry that lover if she is not wedded by 30. The two meet again before her 30th birthday, and their story unfolds. This drama had me giggling at the beginning. The antiques of the girl while using the cheque to play with him were hilarious. The later parts of the show were not just comedy though, and that's what got to me. The drama has a mixture of romance, comedy, drama and supernatural aspects. Also, it left me with the worst second lead syndrome ever. The ghost guy is perfect, and if you are searching for a second lead that will make you cheer for him, Kunda Hsieh is the one. For this drama, I can honestly give an 8/10. Only because it is a very long drama for my usual standards, and there is a character that I find really annoying in the end.

2. Art in Love (2017)

This is one of the few Chinese dramas I managed to watch for Hu. Some of his works were never translated, or if they were, I did not find them on any legitimate websites. Anyway thankfully, this drama was available on youtube on a channel that I believe is legal. Anyhow, the setting of this drama is the main reason I found it fascinating. I love drawing myself and since becoming a comic artist was my dream at one point, I felt a connection with the main actress. The story revolves around a perfectionist art student and a naive but loveable art student. Both meet and work on the same project and start to develop feelings for each other. Hu acts as the perfectionist who is never satisfied with himself, and he sure touched a sore spot with his acting as we all have one or two things that we wish to be perfect at. The acting in this one is top-notch and the storyline as well, so I give it a 9/10.

3. Love, Now (2012)

From what I gathered online, this drama is the main reason many of the international fans got to know this guy. It starts with a trip that the main heroine takes to clear her mind after learning that she has cancer. She meets her prince charming there. Except she is not really sick! How or why? You gotta watch to see what I mean. The later part of this series had some imaginary aspects, a sickness that was solved miraculously with everything in order and an accident that ended with no damage. Anyway, the acting totally covered for that writing issue. My overall rating for this one would be a 7/10 because of the writing issue I mentioned.

4. Love Around (2013)

George Hu and Annie Chen again, the same actress he worked with on "Love, Now". This show discusses the simple storyline of a mafia boss's son who falls in love with a radio host. The idea is simple and a bit repetitive, but it does develop later on. Also, the cast is excellent. The second lead couple gave me butterflies, and Hu's sister is totally adorable. This drama is also a mini-series, so it is only 21 episodes. Did not take that much time to finish, and I felt delighted with the pacing. I can easily give this one 8.5/10.

5. Hayate The Combat Butler

I won't rate this one as I believe live actions from mangas are the hardest thing to make specially a manga with super weird characters and plot like Hayate. George Hu and Park Shin Ye are the main leads of this drama. Shin Ye was totally dubbed, so I feel that was the worst part of the drama. It is not that I don't want her dubbed, I just wish the voice actress did not have such a high-toned voice that did not fit Shin Ye at all. Anyway, Hu acts as Hayate and I personally feel he was passionate and good as the character. Obviously, his acting was a bit lacking in many parts but I can easily add that the writing contributed to that a lot. He was a lot better in later dramas like Love Now, still, you can easily see the talent.

Finally, there is a certain subject that I gotta mention before I end my article on this guy, and that is that he can sing as well. Watch his music video "Don't Disturb " online and listen to the voice. His voice is sure good, though he is not perfect on live shows. His songs are available on Spotify, so check them out. Check out his Instagram as well, he connects with fans in both English and Chinese.

Interesting Facts

- Hu in 2019 participated in the New York Asian Film Festival with Han Dan; a movie in which he plays a very complicated character, unlike his usual romantic comedy characters. Han Dan will hopefully be available to buy or watch online by next year, 2020.
- He recently announced that he is challenging a professional role that will be aired next year in a new Taiwanese drama.
